Kafka Tamura runs away from home on his fifteenth birthday to escape the bleak prophecies of his impossible father. His journey takes him to a strange city, where he meets the old man Nakata who can speak to cats. A brutal murder is committed, but the identity of both perpetrator and victim is a mystery.
